Thanks to Mr. Aslam Khan and his renowned tendency of stealing people’s freedom, promising big bucks for it and later, sweet talking people on how big bucks is nothing compared to experience coz there werent any big bucks in the first place; this blog post was made and thus marked another Delaqroux inc. Update!
A few weeks ago (months actly), Mr. Aslam caught me off guard (again) and dragged me into this little Kindergarten English Camp to be among a group of IPBArian facilitators. Facts were later obtained that we were to facilitate a Kindergarten English Camp (am i repeating myself?) of around 400 kids (yes, undeniably, a "what the @#$%" it was). He did mentioned that there will be payment for the job- An rm2000 to be split up for all 30 of us. Sounds like a good deal and thus, volunteered i to the Reading activity team… In any case, yep, this paragraph is actually the annoying backtracking introductory part of a story, so, let’s just cut to the chase aight?
After some brainstorming (which was more to long and gruelsome coz our reading activity cant seem to be able to come up with any activity), we decided that we will conduct a storytelling + reading activity for the kids. Original ideas was particularly easy, just borrow some books from the ELTC library and read them up with the kids. Nevertheless, to actually borrow books for 400 kids may seem impossible (and, Shen-Ann’s idea of photocopying books as handouts will just make college students out of kindergarten kids- decide to never take up reading forever) so, backup plan; if we cant find enough (in term of quantity and size) books;- WE MAKE EM!
Trust me; the idea sound simple than it seem. Cant really describe how gruelsome it was to come up with 10 copies of large books- all handmade! It was like doing something simple (writing down the text, drawing out pictures, coloring and binding them) but it’s all repititive that it became worse than a nightmare. Imagine sucking one candy in your mouth- easy, but hundreds altogether!!?? …ohkayy.. you get the picture. Yet again, perhaps, the work took longer than expected due to our lack of teammates- Naveen had to take early leave everynight and Shen-Ann.. well, she was there at first but she had to leave on the next few days. So that just leaves me and Ad (lolz. "Ad" for "Adelynn"- cool flick huh?). In any case, we managed to get it all done in the end, 10 copies perfectly book-ified (…shut up! it’s my blog! i can use any words that I want!)
Still, till the last day before the camp, we never actually get the confirmation on the exact number of kids who will be there… and it turned out; there will only be around 100 and we only need 6 of them copies.. (Adam’s annoying "whattatwist" exclamation here). @#$%%$(#&*#$@!!!!!!!
Moving on, we arrived to Chong Min Kindergarten in Jinjang and thus, directly began the camp. Got all freaked out at first though as RJ, who was suppposed to lead us in facilitating this Kindergarten ENGLISH camp, suddenly appeared in front of the kids and parents and delivered her welcome speech in Chinese! HELL! It’s Chinese speaking community outthere and seriously, helping the first aerobic and exercise activity was totally traumatizing! First of all, there were 100 over scared kids who basically, not quite sure what are we saying. Next, there was this line-up of parents by the playfield’s sideline, looking at us as if all of us are prisoners on some service work. In any case, i managed to move myself little by little to the center of the playfield and soon, i somewhat told myself that the parents cant see me ^^;
Then, comes the less traumatizing part where my team of 5- me, Din, Irrina, Nad and Niza were to lead 22 kids for our next in-class activity. Finally, away from the parents.. whew.. our class was a little hectic when the kids finally got a bit too comfortable with us. The storybook reading was ok.. ‘cept for that some of them were more interested in making noises and bullying Din. For the rest of the activities, it was more chaotic than ever! By that point of time, there were way too comfortable with us and soon enough, i, too was bullied by the kids (and they even go tug-a-war with each other for my precious cap… T_T).. Seriously, i’m still wondering how we actually lived through that..
But cool thing was, they start calling me by "kor kor" (and, yes, Din as an out-of-context "leng chai") and somehow, that was a lil sweet of they all. I mean, 20 kids around you and they start to call you by a cute pronoun (at least for me la- call me jakun if you want. Dun care oso! blek!). Some of them even offered me their breaktime meal for me. At that moment, all i can say was "KAWAAAAIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!"
Finally, by the end of the camp and all the kids had left, we all got our payment. Unfortunately, minus this and that from the payment of rm2000, all of us just received rm55 each.. Bleh.. As usual, Mr. Aslam went to that pep talk mode again.. something like **imitating Mr. Aslam-ish deep, (kononnya) romantic voice** "It’s the experience that counts. You can get all the money you want in the world but you wont be able to buy this first-hand experience with that money".. blah.. blah.. ok ok.. so, i have to admit, i love the experience, mr. Aslam and i dont care much bout how much money i received ardy.. bleeeeeh…
Well, last word, if there will be another camp such as this again in the future, i guess i’ll volunteer myself (to get caught off guard by Mr. Aslam) again.. ^^
